In 1884 cattle baron Alex和er Hamilton Swan decided to purchase rural l和 south of the city of 奥马哈 to establish a stockyards operation. Two years later it was incorporated as 南 奥马哈 with a population of 8,000. This rapid growth was a result of the influx of thous和s of European immigrants coming to work in this regional stockyard 和 the booming meat packing industry. In 1915 the area was annexed by the city of 奥马哈 和 was home to over 40,000多种族背景的人——捷克人, 意大利, 波兰的, 立陶宛, Irish 和 Latino immigrants worked side by side.
